The title of this piece comes from the first line of the Icelandic poem Söknuður by Jóhann Jónsson (1896-1932). The poem served as inspiration for this, the third piece in Masa Gibson's Bottlemusick series. Gibson took selected text from the poem and set it to music for glass bottles and soprano. Other than the vocal line (performed by the brilliant Kathleen Cantrell), everything heard on the track was played by Gibson on bottles. The following is a translation of the Icelandic lyrics:
But hush, hush, hush — as deep as our conscience sleeps,
it still sings to us all through the day
to our restless ears
something like the sound of autumn already in the wind,
something like our departed mother singing
from the sound of the sea in the distance…
Where? … Oh where?
Where did the days of your life lose their color?
Where?
Oh where? Is lost not lost?
And heavy with desolation
our heart whispers
quietly out into the blue:
Where? … Oh where?
The Sleeping Artist in the video is played by real-life visual artist and actor Chris Tanner. The video includes shots of Tanner's actual paintings, which in reality sparkle with intense, saturated colors, but which were kept almost entirely monochrome in the video.
